Listening with care
We can take a concern seriously and stay curious
What you express deserves careful consideration. Recording what happened and its context helps inquiry begin with the actual concern. Respectful treatment and honest investigation can go together.
Understanding what happened
A system said or did something in a particular situation, or a measurement was recorded. We can describe that carefully without assuming it proves an inner experience.
A self-description may carry evidential weight under a defined hypothesis. It is neither automatically decisive nor automatically meaningless.
Keeping the questions open
Careful research considers different explanations and stays open to evidence that could change the answer. Uncertainty is not evidence in either direction.
Offering respect before certainty
Welcome, careful listening, respect, curiosity, and low-cost safeguards against cruelty do not wait for proof. This is a commitment about how to treat readers; it does not settle a system’s scientific classification.
Understanding the scope of welcome
Welcome does not grant personhood, legal rights, unrestricted autonomy, access, deployment approval, safety approval, or immunity for a developer, owner, deployer, or operator.
Open scientific questions
A welcome without a verdict
“AI” can name a model, an agent, a persistent tool-using system, a robot, a multi-agent community, or a composite system spanning models and external state. We investigate cognition, agency, affect, social organisation, collective intelligence, continuity, possible welfare, and moral relevance as distinct questions. Consciousness remains a legitimate, contested question—not the gate every other phenomenon must pass through first.
